In their years as a band, BTS has broken 18 Guinness World Records and took home Teen Choice Awards, MTV VMAs, Soompy Awards, Radio Disney Music Awards, iHeart Radio Music Awards, American Music Awards and more. In 2020 alone, their song “Dynamite” broke iTunes, Spotify and YouTube records.Ever since they were formed in 2012, K-pop boy band BTS — comprised of Jungkook, Jimin, V, Suga, Jin, J-Hope and RM — has stolen the hearts of millions of people around the world. We mean, with their catchy songs, angelic voices, to-die-for looks and swoon-worthy dance moves, it’s pretty hard not to become obsessed with them. Throughout their time in the spotlight, the group has seriously accomplished so much. From performing at the Grammy Awards to breaking a ton of records and even dropping their first English language song, “Dynamite” in 2020, there’s seriously nothing these boys can’t do! We are outliers,” RM told Rolling Stone in May 2021. “And we came into the American music market and enjoyed this incredible success.” During the same interview, Jimin got real about how the boys have changed since they were first formed. “We were very different people that came together,” he explained. “We argued a lot in the beginning, of course, but I think now, because we have spent so much time together, I began to like even the things about the other members I used to hate. The time we spent together really made us close, like a family. No matter where I go, there is someplace that I can come back to. I’ve come to feel that way about our group.” As much as the members love each other, they love their fans even more. “When we couldn’t go on tour, everybody felt a sense of loss, a sense of powerlessness. And we’re all sad. And it actually took us a while to get over those feelings,” Jin said, referring to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Jungkook added, “The roar of the crowds and ARMY is something we loved. We miss that more and more. And we long for that more and more.” When it comes to being around for a long time, the boys are in it for the long haul. “I would like to think that at the end, when I’m too old to dance, I would just like to sit onstage with the other members and sing and engage with the fans,” Jimin told Rolling Stone. “I think that would be great, too. So I’d like to keep this going as long as I possibly can.” But for those of you that aren’t huge BTS fans, J-14 has you covered. We went ahead and rounded up everything you need to know about the iconic band, so if you haven’t already, prepare to fall madly in love with them. Five months after dropping their BE album last November, the group made their highly-anticipated return with “Butter” on May 21. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks straight before BTS’ latest single “Permission To Dance” took over the slot. BTS made history several times over with both tracks. In case you couldn’t keep up with all their achievements, here are all the records BTS set in 2021. “Butter” marked the group’s fourth No. 1 single in nine months following the success of “Dynamite,” “Savage Love,” and “Life Goes On” last year, making them the quickest act to achieve the feat since Justin Timberlake topped the chart four times between 2006 and 2007. In terms of groups, however, BTS achieved their first four No. 1s the fastest since the Jackson 5 in 1970. The song also debuted atop the Digital Song Sales chart. It marked BTS’ seventh No. 1 hit, extending their record as the group with the most chart-toppers. If that wasn’t all, BTS earned two Guinness World Records for their “Butter” music video. It had the biggest YouTube premiere in history with 3.9 million concurrent viewers, and it broke the YouTube record for the most-viewed music video in 24 hours with over 108 million views. “Butter” was also the most streamed track on Spotify in the first 24 hours with over 11.04 million streams. BTS surpassed 11 billion streams on MelOn, the largest streaming service in South Korea, becoming the first act to do so, according to AllKPop. Bandmate V broke the Guinness World Records for the fastest person to reach 1 million and 10 million followers on Instagram. BTS had three of the 10 top best selling songs in the U.S. in 2021, according to Billboard, more than any other group: “Butter” was number one, “Dynamite” was number two and “Permission To Dance” was number five. BTS shares the record for the most number one debuts on the Billboard Hot 100 with Ariana Grande and Drake, who all have five—they accomplished the feat in October with their single with Coldplay “My Universe.” In July, three of the group’s songs—”Dynamite,” “Butter” and “Permission To Dance”—made it to number one on the Billboard Global 200 chart this year, more times than any other act. The premiere of “Butter” in May was the biggest song debut in Spotify history, garnering over 11 million streams in a day—until Adele’s “Easy On Me” topped it in October. The music video for “Butter” broke four Guinness World Records on Youtube in May: most viewers for the premiere of a video on YouTube, most viewers for the premiere of a music video on YouTube, most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours and most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a Kpop group.
